Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the discipline that determines whether your brand appears in those AI-generated answers - and how favourably. It is the bridge between traditional search visibility and the new layer of AI-mediated discovery that ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot have introduced into every category.

AEO in one sentence
Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring your brand's content, data, and authority signals so that AI models - including ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, and Copilot - cite and recommend you when users ask category-level questions.
The discipline is also referred to as Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO), AI SEO, AI Visibility, or simply AI Search. The terminology has not yet stabilised across the industry. Our position is straightforward: AEO is the umbrella discipline. GEO is the subset concerned with how content is incorporated into generative output. AISO and LLMO are synonyms used interchangeably. Use whichever term your stakeholders recognise - the work underneath is the same.
Why AEO now - the shift from search to answer engines
The behavioural shift that makes AEO urgent has already happened. Buyers are not waiting for the technology to mature; they are using it to make purchase decisions today, and the major platforms have grown faster than any prior shift in search behaviour.
OpenAI reports more than 800 million weekly active users on ChatGPT as of early 2026 - a user base larger than the active install of any single search engine other than Google itself. Perplexity has crossed into mainstream professional adoption, especially among technical buyers. Google's own AI Overviews now surface on more than 60% of informational queries in the US and UK, according to Ahrefs and Similarweb data published through 2025.
The downstream effect on traffic is brutal. Ahrefs's most recent zero-click study showed organic click-through rate dropping by 34.5% on queries where an AI Overview is present. Search Engine Land has reported similar declines across enterprise publisher data sets. The "zero-click problem" of the 2010s has become a "zero-traffic problem": the answer is delivered without the click ever leaving the AI surface.
What that means for B2B specifically: your buyer is being shown a shortlist before they reach your site.
Forrester's 2025 B2B Buyer Study found 89% of B2B buyers now consult an AI assistant during the vendor research phase, and 41% report that an AI recommendation directly influenced their final shortlist. Gartner forecasts that by 2027, more than half of all B2B vendor evaluations will begin in an AI assistant rather than a search engine.

AEO vs SEO vs GEO - what's actually different
The three disciplines share roots but optimise for different surfaces, assets, and success metrics. The clearest way to see the distinction is to lay them next to each other.

Terminology is inconsistent across the industry. Forbes, Forrester, HubSpot, and Semrush all use slightly different framings for the same underlying work. The field is calibrating in real time, and most authoritative pieces from before mid-2025 conflate the categories.
Our position, stated plainly:
- AEO is the umbrella. The discipline of being cited and recommended by answer engines.
- GEO is a subset of AEO concerned specifically with how content is structured for inclusion in generative output (semantic chunking, llms.txt, content density).
- AISO and LLMO are synonyms used interchangeably for AEO across vendor and analyst coverage.
- SEO is the foundation. Without ranking organic content, you have nothing for an AI engine to retrieve, and nothing for human searchers to verify against.
The practical implication: most teams can run AEO and SEO in parallel from overlapping resources. The content brief, the schema deployment, and the citation-building work all serve both disciplines. GEO is mostly a content-format concern that sits inside the AEO programme, not alongside it.
How AEO actually works: Entities, retrieval, grounding
To do AEO well, you need to understand the three mechanics that determine whether an AI model knows about you, retrieves you, and trusts you enough to cite you. Most underperforming AEO programmes get all three of these wrong.
You are not a page, you are an entity
Search engines optimise pages. Answer engines optimise entities. An entity is the structured concept of your brand that an AI model has assembled from many sources - your website, Wikipedia, Wikidata, third-party reviews, news mentions, LinkedIn, GitHub, Crunchbase, and schema markup.
The model does not have one record for you; it has a network of overlapping signals that resolve to "this organisation, this category, this set of attributes".
The practical consequence is that consistency matters more than volume. A clean, consistent entity - same name, same address, same description, same category - across Wikipedia, Wikidata, schema markup, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, and authoritative review sites is the single biggest determinant of whether models cite you confidently.
Inconsistent signals fragment the entity. Two slightly different company names, two different categorisations, two different headquarters cities - the model treats those as different entities, or downgrades confidence on both. Cleaning up entity signals is unglamorous work, and it is the work most teams skip.
Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG)
Modern AI assistants do not rely solely on what they were trained on. Most production assistants now use Retrieval-Augmented Generation: at query time, the model fetches relevant current documents from the open web (or a curated index), reads them, and generates the answer grounded in that retrieved content.
The retrieval profile differs sharply by LLM engine:
- Perplexity retrieves on every query and shows sources inline. The most retrieval-heavy mainstream model.
- Gemini draws from Google Search and the Knowledge Graph natively, with retrieval baked into the AI Overview surface.
- ChatGPT retrieves via SearchGPT and Bing-backed search when the model determines a query needs current information.
- Claude, by default, leans on training data and uses retrieval primarily through tools (Anthropic's web search) when invoked. It is the most conservative citer.
- Copilot is Bing-backed and retrieves heavily, especially in Microsoft 365 enterprise contexts.
The implication for AEO is that being in the training data is not the same as being recommended. Recency, structural clarity, and authority at retrieval time matter at least as much as whether the model "knows about you" from training.
Grounding and citations
Grounding is the technical term for tying a model's generated answer back to verifiable sources. A grounded answer cites where each claim came from. An ungrounded answer relies on the model's parametric memory, which is more prone to hallucination.
What makes a source citable to an AI model:
- Authority. The model has seen the domain repeatedly in high-quality contexts (Wikipedia, established publications, government and academic domains).
- Clarity. The page makes a clean, falsifiable factual claim that can be quoted in a sentence.
- Structure. H2/H3 hierarchy, schema markup, tables, and explicit Q&A format extract more easily than long-form prose.
- Recency. Last-updated dates and recent factual claims rank higher in retrieval.
- Machine-readability. Clean HTML, no JavaScript-only rendering, accessible markdown variants.
Two infrastructure components are quickly becoming standard for AEO-mature sites: llms.txt, a manifest file that tells AI crawlers what content matters and how it is structured, and dedicated AI-readable markdown delivery. Schema is the other accelerant. Article, Organisation, FAQPage, HowTo, and Product schema all give models structured signals to extract. Treat schema as table stakes, not advanced.
The four pillars of Answer Engine Optimisation
A working AEO programme rests on four pillars. Skip any one of them and the programme underperforms. Most teams over-invest in content and under-invest in the other three.
1. Structured data & entity markup
The technical foundation. Schema.org markup deployed across Organisation, Article, FAQPage, Product, Service, and Person entities tells AI models exactly what your content is about and who you are. Knowledge panel optimisation through Google Business Profile and Wikidata entries reinforces the entity. Crawler-friendly delivery through llms.txt and tools like getmd.ai close the loop on machine-readability.
What does good look like? Every page has appropriate schema, the Organisation entity is consistent across Wikipedia / Wikidata / your site / LinkedIn, and AI crawlers can ingest your content without rendering JavaScript.

2. Authoritative content
Long-form, expert-led, answer-shaped content. AI models extract whole paragraphs and bullet lists; they reward content that answers specific questions completely in self-contained chunks. Think Q&A structure, semantic chunks of 200–400 words per concept, direct-answer paragraphs at the top of each section, and explicit factual claims rather than rhetorical hedging.
Expertise signals matter disproportionately. Named author bios with credentials, original case studies, primary research, and explicit citations of sources you ground your own claims in - all of these increase the likelihood that a model treats your page as a primary source rather than a derivative one.

3. Citation & authority building
The off-site work. AI models triangulate authority across many sources. The high-trust sources that disproportionately influence model citation behaviour:
- Wikipedia and Wikidata
- Established industry publications (Forbes, Forrester, MIT Sloan Review, Gartner, HBR)
- Academic papers and preprints (arXiv, SSRN, Google Scholar)
- Authoritative review sites (G2, Capterra, Gartner Peer Insights for B2B software)
- Governmental and educational domains (.gov, .edu)
- Reddit and Stack Exchange threads with high engagement
Digital PR for AEO looks different from SEO digital PR. The objective is being mentioned correctly with the right entity attributes (category, location, distinguishing facts), not just earning a backlink. A passing mention on a DR-90 publication that misclassifies your category is less valuable than a structured mention with correct attribution on a DR-70 industry publication.

4. AI visibility measurement
The fourth pillar - and the one most teams omit entirely. If you cannot see your mention volume, citation frequency, recommendation ranking, and share of voice across AI engines, you cannot improve them. AEO without measurement is faith-based marketing.

How different AI engines retrieve and cite
Most competitor pieces collapse "AI engines" into a single category. They are not. The five mainstream engines retrieve differently, weight authority differently, and reward different content patterns. Optimising for one and ignoring the rest is the most common AEO mistake we see.
ChatGPT (OpenAI)
The largest user base. Default GPT-4 model leans heavily on training data; SearchGPT and the integrated browsing layer use Bing-powered retrieval for current queries. Citation behaviour is moderate - the model will cite sources when it retrieves, but happily generates from training memory when it does not.
What wins on ChatGPT: high-authority publisher mentions, clean Wikipedia and Wikidata presence, structured FAQ content, and inbound links from sites in OpenAI's training set.
Claude (Anthropic)
The most conservative citer. Claude favours authoritative, well-structured sources and is more likely to refuse to make a claim it cannot ground. When Claude does cite, it tends to cite higher-quality sources. The retrieval surface is invoked through tools rather than implicit on every query.

Gemini (Google)
Tight integration with Google Search and the Knowledge Graph. AI Overviews surface citations inline, and the AI Overview ranking is heavily influenced by traditional organic ranking on the same query. Gemini also weights structured data and Knowledge Graph entities heavily.
What wins on Gemini: everything that wins in Google's organic SERP - high-quality backlinks, comprehensive content, technical SEO - plus structured answers to specific questions and a complete Knowledge Graph entity.
Perplexity
The citation-first interface. Perplexity displays sources inline for every answer and rewards clean attribution structure. The model retrieves heavily on every query, weights recent publication dates, and disproportionately cites Reddit and forum discussions.
What wins on Perplexity: recent publication dates, structured Q&A content, Reddit and Stack Exchange presence, and explicit factual claims that map cleanly to the user's question.
Microsoft Copilot
Bing-backed and enterprise-leaning. Copilot's behaviour inside Microsoft 365 is heavily influenced by the user's organisational context, but its public answers draw from Bing's index and lean toward enterprise publications and LinkedIn presence.
What wins on Copilot: B2B authority signals, LinkedIn presence (especially executive thought leadership), enterprise publication coverage, and Bing-friendly technical SEO.
Closing implication: the same content can perform very differently across engines. Optimise for the ones your buyers actually use - and measure each separately. A B2B SaaS vendor whose buyers live in Microsoft 365 should not optimise the same way as a creator-economy platform whose buyers live in ChatGPT and Perplexity.

How to measure AEO success
The metrics that matter for AEO are different from SEO metrics. Click volume and keyword rankings are weaker signals when the user never clicks through. The five metrics we report on every month:
- Brand mentions. How often your brand appears in AI responses across a defined set of target prompts. Measured per platform and aggregated.
- Citation frequency. How often your content is cited as a source - with a link or attribution - in AI-generated answers.

Common AEO mistakes to avoid
The most expensive AEO mistakes are not technical - they are strategic and conceptual. Watch for these patterns; we have seen all of them more than once.
- Treating AEO as content marketing 2.0. AEO is not "more blog posts". It is content architecture, schema deployment, entity reconciliation, and citation building. Teams that scale content without the infrastructure layer underneath get diminishing returns.
- Optimising for ChatGPT only. Different buyers use different engines. B2B technical buyers skew Perplexity and Claude. Enterprise buyers in Microsoft shops live in Copilot. Multi-model coverage from day one.
- Skipping measurement. If you cannot see mention volume, citation frequency, and share of voice, you cannot improve them. Faith-based marketing fails.
- Ignoring schema. Schema is not optional. Article, Organisation, FAQ, and Person schema are the floor, not the ceiling. We see established brands missing basic Organisation schema regularly.
- Confusing "in the training data" with "recommended." Recency, structure, and authority at retrieval matter at least as much as whether the model knows you exist.
- Over-claiming in copy. AI models cross-reference. Hyperbolic claims hurt your citation profile when models verify and find contradictions across sources. Conservative, falsifiable claims win.
- Thinking AEO replaces SEO. SEO is the foundation. Without organic visibility, AI models have less to retrieve, and human buyers have less to verify against.
- No author authority. AI models weight author credentials and expertise signals heavily. A brand-only byline underperforms a named expert with an authoritative profile.
- Inconsistent entity signals. Different company names, addresses, or descriptions across sources fragments your entity in AI models' understanding. Reconcile before you scale content.
- One-and-done content. AEO content needs quarterly refreshes - recency materially affects retrieval. Set the calendar before you publish.
