What we found

The headline findings

  • In 5 of 18 industries the AI assistants have not settled on a clear leader - the most winnable categories: Short-Term Insurers (Car & Home), Life and Long-Term Insurance, Investment and Asset Management, Private Tertiary Education, IT Managed Services and Systems Integrators.
  • No South African brand scored above 75/100 in any category. The strongest is Payfast in payment providers at 66.3/100 - AI rarely recommends any local brand with full confidence.
  • Household names are named often but recommended rarely: Peach Payments (payment providers), Volkswagen (car brands), Hollywoodbets (betting and gaming), Absa (commercial / corporate banks), Rain (mobile networks) - mentioned frequently yet seldom the actual recommendation.
  • The assistants lean on a small set of sources: businesstech.co.za was cited 329 times across 8 industries, with Hippo, MyBroadband, Wikipedia and Reddit also shaping answers.
  • The median category leader scores just 48.3/100, so in most industries the AI default is weak and winnable with the right Answer Engine Optimisation.

What the score means

The AI Visibility Quality Score

The AI Visibility Quality Score is a 0-100 measure of how strongly AI assistants recommend a brand. It combines how often the brand is named, whether it is actively recommended or merely listed, and its rank position, averaged across 180 AI answers per industry (20 buyer-intent questions, asked to three assistants, repeated three times). A high score means the assistants reliably put the brand forward when a South African asks for the best option. A low score means the brand is largely absent from the moment of decision.

Why this matters

How AI is changing brand discovery

South African buyers increasingly open their search not on Google but inside an AI assistant - "what is the best provider for me?" The assistant answers with a short, confident list. The brands it names enter the consideration set; the brands left off never get a chance. This report measures who the assistants name, recommend and rank across the industries South Africans buy in.

What we measured

How the report was built

We asked ChatGPT (OpenAI), Claude (Anthropic) and Gemini (Google) - each with live web search enabled - the real buyer-intent questions South Africans ask. Twenty questions per industry, asked to three assistants, repeated three times each: 180 answers per industry, 3,240 in total. For every answer we captured which brands were named, which were actively recommended, and where they ranked, then scored each brand on the 0-100 Quality Score.

It is a study by MO Agency measuring how the leading AI assistants - ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini - recommend brands to South African buyers. It analysed 3,240 AI answers and 21,433 source citations across 18 industries and 256 brands, scoring each brand on a 0-100 AI Visibility Quality Score.

What is an AI Visibility Quality Score?

The AI Visibility Quality Score is a 0-100 measure of how strongly AI assistants recommend a brand, combining how often it is named, whether it is recommended or merely listed, and its rank position across the AI answers analysed for its industry.

Which AI assistants were tested?

ChatGPT (OpenAI), Claude (Anthropic) and Gemini (Google), each with live web search enabled, asked the real buyer-intent questions South Africans ask.

How can a brand improve its visibility in AI answers?

Brands improve AI visibility through Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO): publishing clear, structured, citable content, strong entity and schema markup, and authoritative third-party sources the assistants read. MO Agency offers AEO services to close these gaps.
